By Roy Lachica on . Last updated .
Whether you're planning to follow a specific route, navigate a trail, or recreate a friend's ride, getting a GPX file onto your Garmin sports watch is easier than you might think. This guide will walk you through the different methods available.
Method 1: Using Garmin Connect (Recommended)
The easiest way to transfer a GPX file to your Garmin watch is through the Garmin Connect app or website.
Via Garmin Connect Website
- Log in to Garmin Connect
- Click on Training in the left sidebar
- Select Courses
- Click Import and upload your GPX file
- Once uploaded, click Send to Device
- Select your Garmin watch from the list
- Sync your watch using the Garmin Connect app or USB cable
Via Garmin Connect Mobile App
- Open the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone
- Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines)
- Go to Training & Planning → Courses
- Tap the + icon to create a new course
- Select Import and choose your GPX file
- After importing, tap Send to Device
- Ensure your watch is connected via Bluetooth and the course will sync automatically
Method 2: Direct USB Transfer
For users who prefer a direct connection without using Garmin Connect:
- Connect your Garmin watch to your computer using a USB cable
- Your watch should appear as a removable drive
- Navigate to the NewFiles folder (create it if it doesn't exist)
- Copy your GPX file into this folder
- Safely eject your watch
- Disconnect the USB cable
- The course should now be available on your watch under Navigation → Courses
Note: Some newer Garmin models may not support direct USB file transfers. Check your device documentation.
Method 3: Using Third-Party Apps
Several third-party platforms can sync courses directly to your Garmin watch:
- Strava - Export routes and sync via Garmin Connect integration
- Komoot - Plan routes and send directly to Garmin devices
- RideWithGPS - Supports direct syncing to Garmin watches
Finding Your Course on Your Watch
Once the GPX file is transferred to your watch:
- Start an activity (Run, Ride, Hike, etc.)
- Press the Menu button (typically the middle left button)
- Scroll to Navigation
- Select Courses
- Choose your imported course
- Select Do Course
Your watch will now provide turn-by-turn navigation along the route.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Course Not Appearing on Watch
- Ensure your watch is fully synced with Garmin Connect
- Check that the GPX file is valid (use GpxFix to validate and repair if needed)
- Restart your watch
- Remove and re-send the course
File Format Issues
- Garmin watches accept GPX and FIT files for courses
- Some watches have file size limitations (typically around 100-200 waypoints)
- If your GPX file is too large, consider simplifying the route using our Resample track feature
Tips for Best Results
- Simplify complex routes - Too many trackpoints can slow down your watch
- Test before your activity - Make sure the course loaded correctly
- Check battery - Navigation uses more battery than standard tracking
- Download maps - Some Garmin watches support offline maps for better navigation
Conclusion
Getting a GPX file onto your Garmin sports watch opens up a world of possibilities for exploring new routes and following precise navigation. Whether you use Garmin Connect, direct USB transfer, or third-party apps, the process is straightforward once you know the steps.
